Dog Instincts, Needs
and Behaviours
Dogs use their bodies, faces and the noises they make to communicate. They don’t do it in the same way as people, which can lead to misunderstanding and confusion.
Many behaviour problems are just normal dog behaviours such as chewing, barking and growling etc. Though we often think we are being clear by directing and vocalising to our pet's, we are actually not communicating in a way that our dog can understand.
If you want a closed and healthy relationship with your dog, it is important you understand how they communicate so you can be more effective at teaching them. Don’t expect puppies (or even adult dogs) to understand and read your mind automatically. Participating in training classes and working with dog trainers from an early age can be very helpful.
What is Positive
Behaviour Training
Positive behaviour training is the most effective way to train your dog and address any unwanted behaviours. This type of training does not involve aversive techniques or any physical punishment. They receive something they find rewarding to encourage a certain behaviour to be repeated. Food, toys and attention can be used as a reward. Any ‘unwanted’ behaviours are generally ignored. In this way, the dog is not rewarded for any misbehaviour. If dogs are not rewarded (i.e. receives no attention or treats) for a certain behaviour, they tend to stop doing it. Positive behaviour training is enjoyable for the dogs and enhance the bonding between the dogs and their owners
